Fingerstyle Guitar
Fingerstyle (a.k.a. fingerpicking) is a guitar technique which means you pick the strings with your right-hand fingers and thumb.
This contrasts with the conventional technique of strumming and playing single notes with a pick.
For fingerpicking, you can use any type of guitar : acoustic steel string, nylon string or electric.
I enjoy playing this style of guitar the most, as I am able to play the song melody while accompanying myself with a bass line or chords underneath. It is a very self-contained way of playing music, without needing a bass player, pianist or vocalist.
As well as writing my own solo guitar arrangements of songs, I also play arrangements by fingerstyle guitarists Bill Piburn, Steve Eckels and the late Pete Huttlinger.
Bill Piburn has authored several books and was the editor of Fingerstyle Guitar Magazine from 2000 through to 2010.
He currently publishes his own online magazine www.fingerstyleguitarjournal.com
His playing has won him praise from guitarists such as Chet Atkins, Tommy Emmanuel, Earl Klugh and many more.
Steve Eckels is a guitar teacher, author and performer. Steve's professional and artistic mission has been to write and publish music for enjoyment by guitar students. To this end he has published fourteen book/CD sets for Mel Bay Publications. As a solo guitarist, Steve Eckels has recorded albums of music ranging from Classical Masterpieces to Cowboy songs, Native American-influenced to New Age.
Steve's website is at guitarmusicman.com
Pete Huttlinger was a performer, session musician, and teacher. He played with artists such as John Denver and Leanne Rimes. Magazines such as Acoustic Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, Guitar Player, Fretboard Journal, Premier Guitar, Fingerstyle Guitar and Vintage Guitar have all accorded him cover stories and profiles.
Sadly, Pete passed away in 2016 but his wife still runs his website www.petehuttlinger.com where you can purchase albums and sheet music.
Some of Bills's, Steve's and Pete's books are listed below. They are available on Amazon and/or their websites.
